Girls swimmers qualify for five state events

Iowa City High’s girls swimming team competed Saturday at the regional meeting in Marshalltown, earning state qualifying times for five events.


Though she did not qualify for state, West Branch High School senior Lauran Whaley helped earn 34 points for her team after competing in three events.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Whaley took 13th overall, earning four points by finishing in 27.93 seconds.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Whaley took 15th overall with 1:00.99, for two points.

In the 400-yard freestyle, the Iowa City squad finished fifth overall, earning 28 points with 4:02.97. Whaley swam her lap in 1:00.96.

The team will compete this weekend, Nov. 3 and 4, at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s 2017 State Swimming and Diving meet in the following events:

• 200-yard medley: Seeded 13th with 1:51.63

• 200-yard freestyle: Seeded 15th is sophomore Carly Weigel with 1:56.45 and seeded 23rd is sophomore Trinity Sadecky with 1:57.73

• 500-yard freestyle: Seeded 21st is Sadecky with 5:18.74

• 200-yard freestyle relay: Seeded 14th with 1:41.29

• 100-yard backstroke: Seeded No. 8 is Weigel with 58.59
