School enrollment increases by 4 pupils in 2017-18 year

With an additional four pupils counted in this school year’s Certified Enrollment, West Branch should see a bump in state aid.

The Board of Education met Nov. 8 in a workshop session to review new enrollment figures and conduct some planning.

“Enrollment is everything” when it comes to school funding, Superintendent Kevin Hatfield said. State financial aid is distributed to public schools based on a formula that factors in a school’s Certified Enrollment.

West Branch counted 773.3 pupils for the 2017-18 school year, according to figures presented the board. Once weighting for special education pupils is taken into account, that amounts to about four more pupils than the 769.35 enrolled in 2016-17.

The school counted 855 for “Total Enrollment,” which adds in any pupils whose families seek any services from West Branch schools, even if they do not attend classes full-time.

The superintendent noted that 64 children enrolled from outside the district.

“That is the most ever in the last 15 years,” he said.

The figures also count 58.2 pupils who live inside the district but enroll in others, which is the highest of the 12 years of statistics he presented.

The lowest number of open-enroll-in pupils in the past dozen years came in 2013-14, when 40 came in. The lowest number of open-enroll-out pupils was in 2009-10, when 42.4 children went out.
