New picnic tables at Wapsi made by high school class

West Branch High School’s construction class sold its products before, and this time to the City of West Branch.

On Friday, the city took delivery of five picnic tables — made by high school students — and brought them over to Wapsi Park.

Parks & Recreation Director Melissa Russell said she heard last year about the class making picnic tables and asked Industrial Tech instructor Randy Robertson if his class would build some for city parks.

He agreed, and two classes generated three at the end of last school year, plus another in just the last three weeks. The second batch was a product of 12 students spread over two classes.

The city paid $1,125 for all eight tables, or about $140 each.

Russell said the project was “mutually beneficial” and the picnic tables were of comparable cost.

“It allowed students to get practical experience as well as giving back to the community,” she said. “When they go by (the park) they can see them and think, ‘Hey, I built this.’ It worked out great.”

Robertson’s class votes on projects each year, and last year the students picked picnic tables. The instructor said any profits go back into the program, and he said some of the money went to buy lunch at a recent welding competition.
