John E. Thompson, 95, of Seminole, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018.

John was born Nov. 10, 1922, to John and Linna (Pennock) Thompson in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up in the small Iowa farming community of West Branch; he graduated from West Branch High School.

John married Barbara M. Rummells in 1943. He farmed in West Branch until joining First National Bank in Iowa City where he worked for 22 years in various capacities, retiring as 2nd Vice President, responsible for customer service. He was active in many Masonic organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Grand Patron of Iowa Grand Chapter and was Senior Grand Deacon, Grand Lodge of Iowa.

John and Barbara retired to Florida in 1985. John led an active retirement involved in his community, such as on the boards of the condominiums where he and Barbara lived, his church, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Freedom Square, the retirement community they moved to in 2003.

He will be missed for his quick wit and his willingness to serve others, volunteering for many community organizations, often as the treasurer.

Barbara preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2007.

Surviving are two loving daughters, Susan (David) Kinsey of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Martha (Stephen) Resotko, of Steuben, Maine; three grandchildren: Leah Keeley, Thomas Temeyer and Peter Swarr; and four great-grandchildren: Amanda Mercer, Ashley Temeyer, Lucy Swarr and Eli Swarr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to the Museum of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg or the Pasadena Community Church, where he was a member.

A Celebration of His Life was held on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Freedom Square, the retirement facility where he resided. Interment will be in Florida.
