Robert E. Wertzbaugher, 86, of Atalissa, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
A graveside service was held Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the West Branch Municipal Cemetery in West Branch. Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established. Robert was born Feb. 11, 1927, in Iowa City, the son of John W. and Viola May Hastings Wertzbaugher. He graduated from West Branch High School. Robert went on to serve in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was united in marriage to Rosemary J. Howard on Sept. 14, 1947. Robert farmed in the Atalissa area for most of his life. He was a member of the West Branch American Legion Post 514, the Masons, and the American Motorcycle Association.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary; daughters: Nancy Blunk of Tampa, Fla., Wendy (Tom) Rios of Davenport, Iowa, and Terri (Abe) Henning of West Branch; sons: John (Nonie) Wertzbaugher of Atalissa and Tom (Crystal) Wertzbaugher of Clarksville, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren with two on the way.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Wertzbaugher, and sisters Margaret West and Mary Marks.
