Viola Arlene Eichelberger, 88, of West Liberty, died peacefully on March 31, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, from complications of a stroke.
She had spent two weeks at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty before going to the hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4 at Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, rural West Liberty. Burial was in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
Viola was born Dec. 13, 1918 in Lone Tree, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Buline Schuessler. She was a graduate of Lone Tree High School. On Dec. 16, 1937 she was married to Raymond L. Kile. They made their home near West Liberty farming and raising Angus cattle. They also owned and operated Kile’s Feed and Grain in Nichols and Downey. They had three children, Karen, Eldon and Krista. They later divorced. She later married Ed Eichelberger on Sept. 17, 1981 and moved to Des Moines, where Ed became the manager of interim events at the State Fairgrounds. Viola was the manager of the Iowa State Fair Campgrounds. After several years they moved to Davenport, and Ed managed the Mississippi Valley Fair and Viola worked in the office.
Viola loved being back in West Liberty closer to her family. She loved her flowers and Ed’s fresh garden vegetables. She was president of the Community Senior Center for several years and enjoyed playing cards and eating lunch with her many friends.
Survivors include her husband Ed; three children, Karen Lou Wallace and husband Joseph “Ralph” of Iowa City, Eldon “Bud” Kile and wife Sue of West Liberty, and Krista Kay Kirkpatrick and husband William “Bill” of Waverly; eight grandchildren, Douglas and Dennis Beaver, Kim Ellingson, Kurt, Kevin and Kathy Kile and Megan and Julie Kirkpatrick; six great-grandchildren, Kile, Victoria and Casey Beaver, Dillon and Corey Beaver and Brock Ellingson; a stepdaughter, Peg Eichelberger and her son Ryan of West Liberty; and a brother, Harold Schuessler and his wife Doris of Lone Tree. She was preceded in death by two infant sisters; a sister, Marcella Hahn; husband Raymond Kile; a grandson, Daniel Kile; and two stepsons, David and Gary Eichelberger.
