More than 50 children got spiffied up for school at a free “Haircuts & Hot Dogs” event Friday at Hoover Elementary.
Haley Wall, Leah Shultz Coates, Danny Gates and West Branch Community Schools Superintendent Marty Jimmerson organized the event for children from preschool through 12th grades.

“We had an amazing turnout for our first-ever Haircuts & Hot Dogs event,” Wall wrote in a Facebook message to the Times.

The organizers spent two months planning to bring in hair stylists, donations, and volunteers.

She said eight stylists volunteered their expertise and were “very willing to cut hair!”

Wall’s father, Chuck Pence, and David Tatman manned the grill and cooked up hot dogs donated by North Dodge Hy-Vee.

The Parent-Teacher Organization, West Branch Kiwanis, West Branch Food Pantry, Danny Gates, Patricia Harpole, Lori Feed Waters, Michaela Wolfram and “Granny” welcomed families as they came into the gymnasium.

The event also accepted donations to the Food Pantry.

“We raised a great amount for them!” Wall said.

In addition to all of the supporters, Wall thanked the school district for use of the building. The event lasted for two hours.

“Let’s keep making these events happen, guys!” Wall wrote. “Kids deserve the world!”
