Letter: My opponent ran negative, nasty campaign Op-Ed · October 30, 2024
Editor’s note: While the West Branch Times did not allow most letters election letters, we did allow letters from the candidates themselves to make a final pitch before Nov. 5. I’m sure most of you can agree that it is a good thing that the election season is almost over.
For me, personally, it has been the most personal and nastiest campaign ever run against me.
I didn’t think it was possible for someone to sling more mud than the two Iowa City liberals I ran against in the past, but my current opponent has actually managed to tell more lies than the rest of my opponents combined.
The temptation to go hard negative is high (and there is an abundance of content) but I will not do that. I will let his actions speak for themselves.
I want to end this campaign by telling you what I have done and ask for your vote.
As your state representative, I have one of the most bipartisan voting records in the Capitol.
I have voted for healthy increases in public education funding every single year, raised beginning teacher pay to 5th in the nation, and made mental health funding a priority.
I have voted to lower your property taxes, lower your income taxes, and make sure small-town businesses have a regulatory environment in which they can thrive.
I have floor-managed legislation to make EMS an essential service, provided critical funding for our firefighters and police, and made sure Iowa is not a sanctuary state for illegal immigration while welcoming new citizens to our country and state.
Every year I have been your state representative I have voted for a balanced budget and Iowa is categorized by multiple non-partisan organizations as one of the best fiscally managed states in the country.
Fighting eminent domain abuse and ensuring your private property rights are protected has been my trademark. Three laws protecting private property rights have been signed into law in the last decade and I have authored and floor-managed all of them.
I am blunt and to the point when it comes to defending Cedar, Muscatine, and Scott Counties. For that I do not apologize. You always come first before party and special interests.
I also will not make apologies for standing up for common sense and political sanity. I honor my campaign promises and only promise what I believe I have a chance to deliver. I will stand firm and dig in my heels always to defend all of you.
It has been an honor to be your state representative and I humbly ask for your vote to continue common sense in politics on or before November 5th.
Bobby Kaufmann
State Representative
