Girls’ wrestling team earns first dual victory

In a final tuneup before winter break, the West Branch girls’ wrestling team collected its first dual win of the season in a non-conference triangular held Dec. 19 at Lisbon.
“It feels good,” Bears Head Coach Brian Driscoll said of the win. “We won two out of three matches in that dual. We won the majority and then the forfeit game, of course, took over. It was nice to just get a ‘W.’”

The victory came in the Bears’ first matchup of the night in the co-ed meet against Lone Tree. While West Branch still had Karly Shelton and Mia Rice unavailable to wrestle, the Bears used timely wins in the forfeit game and some crucial head-to-head performances to secure the triumph by a score of 35-18.

Gisele Gross had West Branch’s first win over the Lions, pinning Kayleigh Rundlett in 3:06 to take 145. Saylee Gingerich also had a head-to-head victory at 235, pinning Sami Branson in 4:44 to give West Branch five points after one was subtracted due to a penalty.

“We stress that if you get them on their back, put them away,” the coach said. “It’s just hard when you only have three or four matches to have an ability to get mat work in.”

West Branch had a rare win in the forfeit game, picking up 12 extra points by taking four of the six open classes outside of the four double forfeits. Rice, battling an illness, took 115 while Shelton also suited up to add some extra points. Hanna Lacina (155) and Teagyn Hartz (190) had forfeit wins as well.

The Bears finished the night against host Lisbon, which was hosting its first-ever home duals as a program. West Branch fell 60-12 to the strong Lions squad.

Gingerich had the lone head-to-head win for the Bears, pinning Shyanna Crane in 2:48. Crane had moved up a class to avoid wrestling Hartz, who took 190 by forfeit.

Lisbon’s full lineup helped the Lions rack up points, with seven of the eight forfeits going the home team’s way while 105 and 110 were double forfeits.

“The second meet didn’t go our way,” Driscoll said. “We had a couple matches where we beat them earlier in the year and then they came back and beat us. And then Teagyn, they dodged her, moved up to Saylee and Saylee pinned her. We got a victory at heavyweight there instead of 190, so that was nice.”

Regaining health and improving will be the goals for the Bears over the winter break before the team’s next competition on Jan. 6.

“We have a pretty long break,” Driscoll said. “We’re going to get people healthy, get people back. We’ve just got to get healthy and work on our fundamentals. That’s where we’re losing some traction here.”
