Acciona Windpower providing 30MW wind farm with turbines News · December 10, 2015
Acciona Windpower announced last week it will supply 10 of its 3 megawatt turbines to a wind farm in central Iowa.
The turbines will be assembled in Spain but the West Branch facility will operate and maintain the machines for a decade. The company expects the wind farm to be online by November 2016.
The AW125-3000 turbines will be built with 125-meter rotors and 87.5-meter steel towers, “a configuration designed for maximum production at the lowest cost of energy,” read a press release.
The company Building Energy is constructing the 30MW wind farm, its first in the United States, which will produce power for Alliant Energy.
“Acciona Windpower is proud to partner with Building Energy to further the growth of clean energy here in Iowa and around the globe,” Acciona Windpower North America CEO Enrique Teruel said in a statement. “We are confident that Acciona Windpower’s turbine technology will help make this project a success.”
Building Energy is a renewable energy company operating in 24 countries, read the press release.
“Building Energy is delighted to collaborate with Acciona Windpower, a major player in the wind power sector,” Building Energy Managing Director USA Andrea Braccialarghe said in a statement. “We have chosen this company for their expertise and the performance of their turbines, which is a crucial factor for the project outcome. Acciona turbines will be used for the development of a series of medium-sized wind farms in Iowa spread throughout the state in order to produce energy for as many local communities as possible.”
With the completion of this wind farm, Acciona “will expand (its) footprint in the United States to over 1,400 MW” read the release.
Acciona Windpower is a subsidiary of Acciona Energy, based in Spain. According to the press release, the United States is its largest market outside of Spain.
Acciona Windpower’s assembly plant in West Branch idled in April 2013, though the company still uses the headquarters for management, sales and a base for operating and maintaining existing wind farms.
