With a bunch of Santa hats and gobs of ugly Christmas sweaters, some 50 people ran laps at Cubby Park on Saturday for the first Snowball Sprint.
With a seasonably warm 32 degrees in the air, the runners — some in full costume to reflect the “Holiday Movie Magic” theme — covered two kilometers during the Christmas Past event..

West Branch Parks and Recreation Director Erin Laughlin said Michelle Sexton and her daughter, dressed as elves, won the costume contest.

Runners got to listen to upbeat Christmas music pumped through a sound system.

Though more of a fun run than a timed race, the first person crossing the finish was West Branch High School sophomore Grace Hamann, finishing in less than 10 minutes.

For a first-time event, Laughlin said she was “very happy” with the turnout.

She think she will tweak the course next year to make it easier for runners to follow.

“And the weather’s not bad. The sun’s out, so it’s not terrible. I’ll take it,” she smiled.
