Festival of Trees opens with movie theme

On one tree, a leg lamp. Next to another, an empty Santa suit lies on the floor. On another, John McClane appears to crawl through a vent.

More than a dozen Christmas trees reflecting the “Holiday Movie Magic” theme fill the lobby of the Rummells Center for the annual Festival of Trees.

The exhibit opened last week for A Christmas Past and remains open through Dec. 30.

Hoover Presidential Foundation President Mundi McCarty told Foundation members on Dec. 5 that designers Dave and Deb Johnson and Tina Sullivan volunteered about 500 hours “to make this room look spectacular.”

“They’re absolutely incredible,” she said, gesturing to the trees.

Deb named The Polar Express tree her favorite; Dave picked Home Alone.

Sullivan chose the first-time “Auction Tree,” a red-and-white tree with a rotating base decorated with large ornaments of candy canes, jingle bells, and poinsettias.

She said visitors in the past asked if the Foundation would auction off the trees, so this year’s exhibit features the first one up for auction.

The movie selections include both classics and popular modern movies, from “A Christmas Carol” to “A Christmas Story” to “Jack Frost.”

This is the fourth year the Foundation hosted the exhibit after the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum handed it off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

McCarty announced that the $20.3 million Timeless Values | Modern Experience campaign just reached $18.4 million to update the museum and that fundraising would continue through 2026.

“We’ll have a brand new, refreshed library,” she said.
