Joseph Guido Panozzo, 87, died peacefully in his sleep following an extended illness Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the Crestview Care and Rehab Center in West Branch, Iowa.

Funeral mass was 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Rockford, Ill. Burial with military honors was in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Joseph was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Angelo and Marina Zonata Panozzo. On Oct. 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to the former Josephine DeBenedetto. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. He had been employed with Carnation for many years in Los Angeles, California and Rochelle, Ill. He served on the planning commission for many years and served as mayor for 4 years in Rochelle. He authored two books: “American in Jeopardy” and “One Man’s Journey into War.” Joe was an avid golfer and bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of West Branch; one son, Joey Panozzo and his wife, Kim Wiley Panozzo; granchildren Joey, René, and Marie Panozzo and Brack Bingham; sisters in law Anita (Jay) Guarino, Pauline Panozzo and Judy DeBenedetto; and nieces and nephews Karen and Frank Guarino, Mark Panozzo and Brian and Judi (DeBenedetto) Schrock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Angelo on Aug. 29, 1991, and a brother, Gino.
