Wall cracked in newest WBHS gym
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · January 16, 2015

A parent pointed out a crack in the southeast corner of the "new gym" at West Branch High School.
The crack is on the east wall, near the wall that separates the gymnasium from the weight room, and runs from the ceiling to just past the top of an exterior doorway.

Superintendent Kevin Hatfield said the crack "wasn't there in the summer" and it was first pointed out to him in October.

The superintendent said he had Struxture Architects take a look, and they reported the crack is likely caused by settling yet is not a danger "in any manner" and can be repaired.

He also noted that a mason will come in to look at the crack and Struxture will return in the spring to see if the crack has worsened.

The $2.7 million gym/weight room addition was completed in February 2012, and Hatfield said this is the second crack found: the first was discovered in the weight room soon after completion and the contractor, Garling Construction, made the repairs at no cost to the district.
