Boys track wins Chad Gates Invitational

The West Branch Bears boys track and field team won their home meet April 13.


“I would like to thank the West Branch High School, the West Branch community members, and everyone else that came out and supported the Chad Gates Invitational, West Branch Head Coach Taylor Larson said. “We had a ton of people that volunteered and others that watched the meet.”

Team scores: 1) West Branch 151, 2) Calamus-Wheatland, 3) West Liberty 109, 4) Wilton 83, 5) Durant 76

John Muckler won the 3200m run, finishing in 10:57.33. “Muckler continues his personal record streak in the 3200,” Larson said.

In the 1600m run, Atlas Kolpin was fifth in 5:14.64, and Keegan Sotelo was eighth in 5:47.39.

In the 800m run, Jordan Baldwin finished in 2:10.07 for second place in a season-best effort. Jacob Graves finished seventh in 2:27.50. Will Martin finished in 2:33.79.

In the dashes, Trevor Thein ran the 100m dash in 12.74 for fifth place. Jace Gongora finished in 14.61. Tanner Lukavsky was fourth in the 200m dash, finishing in 24.58, a personal record. Dalyn Pederson ran the race in 29.49, and Thein finished in 26.54. The Bears double-scored in the 400m dash. Cale Donovon finished in fourth place with a time of 1:02.01.

“Donovan ran a nice race,” Larson said.

Ben Kyllinstad finished in sixth place in 1:04.98. Marcus Gould had a time of 1:22.40.

Cooper Kabela won the 110m hurdles with a person-record time of 15.63. Billy Friis was third in 19.38, and Jonathan Wargo was fourth in 20.05.

In the 400m hurdles, Ben Thompson won with a time of 1:03.24. Friis was second in 1:08.82, and Luca Passeri was third in 1:09.63.

The Bears competed well in the field events. Cole Tisinger was second in the discus with a throw of 128-06. “Tisinger continues to improve and hit a personal record in the discus,” Larson said. Donovan was sixth with a throw of 107-10. Colton Dietz had a throw of 99-06, and Jacob Barnhart had a throw of 91-02.

Jonathan Wargo was third in the high jump, clearing 4-10. John Yates was fourth with the same height. Luke Lenoch was third in the long jump with a season-best 19-07.50 leap. Brandon Rummelhart jumped 16-05.00, and Jace Gongora jumped 14-09.00.

“Colton Dietz hit a season-best in the shot put,” Larson said. He put the shot 40-03.50 for second place. Barnhart put the shot 35-10.00, Marcus Gould put the shot 30-09.00, and Chris Mahon put the shot 32-06.00.

In the relay races, the Bears had a string of second-place finishes, a fourth-place finish, and two third-place finishes.

“The 4x800 team of Baldwin, Yates, Kolpin, and B. Thompson ran a season-best,” Larson said. They placed second with a time of 9:00.99.

“The 4x100 team of Luke Lenoch, Cooper Kabela, Wyatt Goodale, and Tanner Lukavsky ran a season best,” Larson said. They placed fourth in 48.88.

In the 4x200, Lenoch, Luca Passeri, Wyatt Goodale, and John Yates finished third with a time of 1:42.62. The 4x200 team of Dakota Kaalberg, Levi Kleinmeyer, Brandon Rummelhart, and Jonathan Wargo finished in 1:48.49.

Yates, Baldwin, Thompson, and Kabela finished the 4x400 in 4:09.86, taking third place.

Finishing second was shuttle hurdle relay. Team members were Goodale, Wargo, Graves, and Kabela. Their time was 1:10.18. The team of Friis, B. Thompson, Zach Thompson, and Kyllingstad finished the SHR with a time of 1:15.98.

Dalyn Pedersen, Kyllingstad, Goodale, and Passeri finished the sprint medley in second place in a time of 1:49.82.

The distance medley team of Lukavsky, Passeri, Pedersen, and Will Martin was second in 4:15.40.
