Bears collect 7 varsity wins at MP quad
by Gregory R. Norfleet · Sports · December 14, 2017

The West Branch Wrestling team won seven head-to-head matches Dec. 7 in a four-team contest at Mid-Prairie.

Plus, the coach saw improvement in both varsity and junior varsity grapplers against West Liberty, Mid-Prairie and Regina.

Jacob Graves and Tyler Siemen led the team with two wins each, with Jacob Barnhart, John Yates and Joe Seydel also recording varsity wins.

In four junior varsity exhibition matches, Harold Blakey won two of his own three matches.

Seydel dominated his Mid-Prairie 126-pound opponent, David Miller, delivering the widest scoring gap for the Bears that night with a 13-1 major decision.

“Obviously he did a good job but we had about three opportunities to pin the guy,” Head Coach Cody Krumwiede. “It would have been nice if we could have gotten that fall. We’ll work on clinching some things up for him this week.”

Sophomore Zach Wright faced the Golden Hawks’ 145-pound David Murry in what turned into a triple overtime battle after the two tied 2-2 at the end of three periods. Murry pulled out a 5-2 win in the only overtime match West Branch saw that night.

The coach said Wright “needs to be a little more smooth” to pull out a win against Murry.

“We’re better than that guy, but we’ve just got to open up a little bit more,” Krumwiede said.

Graves fought an aggressive match against Mid-Prairie 152-pounder Miles Burrows. Graves’ 8-5 win on paper does not express the high amount of energy and up-and-down action between the two.

“He was shooting his shots,” the coach said, but draping his arm hindered takedowns, yet Graves cleared that up by his second match. “He did what he needed to do in the second match.”

In that second match, Graves faced Regina’s Will Bobst, taking a quick 4-1 lead in the first before pinning him at the 1:18 mark.

“He did a lot better in the second dual,” Krumwiede said.

Morgan Hartz did not earn any wins, but the freshman fought a close battle with Golden Hawk 170-pounder Josh Wallington that ended 10-8. Hartz had scored two takedowns in the final period but time ran out.

“He’s doing better, but there are still some obvious things we need to work on,” the coach said.

Hartz also lasted until the third period against West Liberty junior A.J. Lenz. A week earlier, Hartz came from behind with a surprise pin on the Comet.

Barnhart got a rematch with West Liberty’s Andy Lopez. Lopez a week earlier pinned Barnhart a quarter of the way into the second period. Barnhart fared better this time, nearly turning Lopez on his back at a few times though he was unable to follow through. Yet the heavyweight senior held on until late in the final period before Lopez overcame him.

“Obviously the end result wasn’t what we wanted, but the five minutes leading up to that was what we actually wanted to see for him,” Krumwiede said. “This time, he wrestled the guy tough, he almost got him turned over about three or four times. He’s still going a little too far over the shoulders (and) that’s more of an exposure thing.”

He said Lopez caught Barnhart in a hold that Barnhart had yet to see much in practice, which is how the Comet pulled off the win.

“It’s a learning process,” Krumwiede said.

Blakey and Dylan Butler stepped onto the mat for the first time this season as latecomers to the wrestling team.

The 145-pound Blakey pinned West Liberty’s Damen Feik in the first period — the only West Branch wrestler to defeat a Comet that night — and pinned Regina’s Jack Goedken in the third period.

Butler went up against Mid-Prairie’s Dominic McCain and fell in the first period.

For the first time out for the team, they did fine for Krumwiede. Blakey had wrestled in junior high and Butler is new to the sport.

“The output level, I’m very happy with,” the coach said. “They’re obviously not going to know everything. But I’m happy with the effort. They saw the team needed help (with open weights) and they decided to help us out.”

Butler stepped onto the mat at 182 pounds against Regina, earning six points when the Regals could not field an opponent at that weight class.
