Love fishing as much as Hoover? Fest offers expo Sports · July 11, 2007
President Herbert Hoover’s lifelong love of fishing began right here in West Branch in the Wapsinonoc Creek.
Inspired by Hoover’s enthusiasm for the sport, Hooverfest planners are collaborating with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and a number of area organizations to bring a “Fishing Expo” to the Village Green on Saturday, August 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free hands-on fishing activities are the focus of the expo.
Cedar and Johnson County Conservation Boards will help provide fun for all ages.
Fish biologists from Lake MacBride State Park are bringing six 45-gallon aquariums stocked with a variety of fish found in Eastern Iowa.
A volunteer at the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque will spin tales of fishing along the “Old Muddy,” while members of the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association demonstrate the art of tying flies similar to those used by President Hoover.
The Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Iowa Women in Outdoor Sports emphasize fishing and boating safety, while the University of Iowa Natural History Museum provides information about current environmental research.
Having fished in many venues from boyhood into old age, Hoover wrote about the sport: “Tis the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of the sun on the blue water.”
Visitors are invited to find out more about Hoover’s favorite sport at the Fishing Expo, sponsored by the generous help of area agencies.
