Despite not competing since March 28, the West Branch girls’ golf team improved its team score and collected another River Valley Conference dual win Monday night at home.
The Bears took on Durant at Cedars Edge, taking a tight 213-217 matchup, a six-stroke improvement from its 219 posted in a road win over West Liberty in their only previous competition as poor weather postponed several events.

“We were excited to have some decent weather for the meet last night,” Bears Head Coach Jan O’Neil said. The coach added that the team did have the luxury of using the ACE building to work on swings and short game when the weather was too poor to play outside.

Claire Jarrett turned in another medalist performance, with the senior achieving a 44.

Claire is a wonderful role model and team leader,” the coach said. “She puts in the extra time on the course and the others realize the results you can come have with the effort you put in.”

West Branch’s young core showed improvement as well, with the three remaining scoring golfers cracking the 50’s. Olivia Thomas finished second on the team with a 54, while McKenna Worrell carded a 57. Julia Herring had a 58.

“I’m so impressed by the mindset these girls have about the game,” O’Neil said. “After each round they will verbalize what needs to be focused on in practice and set out to focus on a weak area of their game. Seeing the results is so rewarding.“

Adelyn Hetrick contributed a 67, while Joelle Haas shot an 86.

While the Bears will not return to action until an April 15 dual against Wilton at Wahkonsa Golf Course, West Branch will have a packed schedule with three events in four days from the 15th to the 18th. O’Neil said the team is focusing on improving stamina, especially with 18-hole tournaments beginning soon.
