Professor and ambassador to visit Hoover Library on April 26
News · April 17, 2024

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum will host a lecture by Professor Jan Wouters on Friday, April 26, at 11 a.m.
The special lecture details Herbert Hoover’s involvement in the restoration of the Leuven Library after its destruction during World War I.

The building with its 300,000 titles was burned, and an effort was started among U.S. colleges to restore it. When funds became scarce, Herbert Hoover stepped into the effort to ensure its completion.

The lecture will highlight the visit of former Belgian Ambassador to the United States Dirk Wouters. Wouters served as ambassador from 2016-2020. Prior to this role, he served Belgium within the government and in positions within the EU and UN.

Currently, Dirk Wouters is advisor to the Belgian Royal Family, organizing trade missions abroad. He also created a new America-Europe Fund at the University of Leuven, where he is an adjunct professor on Transatlantic relations and sits on the Board of Governors.

This event is hosted by the Hoover Presidential Foundation, Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, and Herbert Hoover National Historic Site.

Since 1954, the Hoover Presidential Foundation has worked to promote and support the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, National Historic Site, and other programs that enhance the understanding of Herbert Hoover as President and humanitarian. This includes recognition of uncommon individuals through awards and scholarships.

Its roots date to 1938, when the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Society was formed to maintain the birthplace cottage. In 1954, the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Foundation was formed, which led to the dedication of the Herbert Hoover Library and Museum in 1962 and the establishment of the National Historic Site in 1965.
