The West Branch boys’ track team had several encouraging performances in a fourth-place showing and 78.5 points in the Bears’ April 9 meet at Lisbon.
“We took another really good step,” Bears Head Coach Taylor Larson said. “We saw some really good things.”

Lisbon took its home meet with 155 points, followed by Mount Vernon’s 140. Vinton-Shellsburg finished ahead of the Bears with 94, while Camanche took fifth with 71.5.

The Bears had one event win, as the distance medley relay of Conner Capper, Trenton Schutte, Lincoln Naber, and Joe Hamann took the race in 3:45.78.

“When our D-med PR’s by six seconds, that’s a win,” the coach said.

He mentioned that Naber and Hamann had especially strong races in that event.

The Bears had a field day in field events, with three second-place finishes and four total placings.

Reese Trepanier had the runner-up spot in both throwing events. The senior had a 136 feet, 4 inch toss in the discus and added a 46-03.00 in the shot put.

Auron Marsh had a strong performance in the long jump, taking second with a 19-09.50.

Nathan Hills placed seventh in the high jump with a 5-04.00.

“Our field events really got us started, Larson said. “We went out, Auron Marsh hit 19, 19-09 and a half. He’s getting better, he’s hitting some better distances, he’s getting comfortable with his approach. Reese [Trepanier] goes out, gets a PR in the shot put and second place and then he goes and gets second in the discus. When we’re walking out of field events and scoring 24 points, you feel pretty good.”

Several relays had top-three finishes. The sprint medley of Logan Christoffel, Schutte, Naber, and Hamann took second in 1:39.48 while the shuttle hurdle quartet of Nolan Staker, Marsh, Jake Swisher, and Eli Farmer placed third in 1:14.06. In the 4x400, the team of Naber, Reid Hansen, Hamann, and Christoffel battled for third in 3:39.29. Hamann, who scored both of the school’s goals in West Branch’s road win over Maquoketa the previous evening, helped put the Bears in contention with a strong push in the third leg. The other relay members had good runs of their own to set up the positive result that capped off the meet.

The coach also mentioned that the sprint medley had a PR, while both 4x200 groups “ran well” and have some things that they can work on to improve further.

Hansen continued his improvement in the 400 meter hurdles, taking third in 1:04.64. Swisher also placed in the event with an eighth-place 1:08.69.

Several other events added points with placings. The 4x800 of Shay Kinsinger, Oliver Trepanier, Preston Mayhew, and Joseph Schlitz took fifth in 10:26.68. Kinsinger also placed in the 400 meter dash with a 1:01.03. The 4x200 of Christoffel, Connor Rios, Hansen, and Marsh took fifth in 1:39.05, while the non-scoring team of Zachary Capper, Spencer Green, Brennen Dale, and Staker had a seventh-place 1:40.97. The 4x100 of Conner Capper, Marsh, Schutte, and Rios placed fifth in 46.24.

Larson feels that the team is starting to round into form in the middle of the season.

“We’re getting there,” he said. “You can see that we’re getting there. It’s the little by little. This is a good feeling as we’re walking out of this place.”

The coach added that getting to face some really strong track teams in the meet helped his team gain confidence as the end of the season approaches.

After a Monday night meet at Central DeWitt, the Bears had an April 18 competition at West Liberty on the calendar. Larson said that his team will take on some more tough, larger schools at DeWitt before competing in the smaller meet at West Liberty. The coach added that “each week is a process” with developing a younger squad into a roster that can be in the mix for the key meets at the end of the year.
