Storm forces AirCare to put down at P&G
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · April 07, 2010

An AirCare helicopter made a “precautionary landing” in the Procter & Gamble parking lot just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday when strong winds, hail and a thunderstorm blew through the area.

West Branch Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said responding emergency personnel helped move the patient on board to a Johnson County Ambulance to finish the trip to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

U of I Hospitals spokesman Tom Moore said the pilot made the “precautionary landing” to avoid the storm while flying from Genesis East Hospital in Davenport. Stoolman said the pilot told him that weather service told the pilot he should have enough time to get to Iowa City before the storm blew in, but “it came in faster than they thought.”

“He was glad to find that spot,” Stoolman said, adding that a Cedar County Sheriff’s deputy remained with the pilot while the storm passed.

P&G Site Leader Darin Miller said the AirCare helicopter took off from the lot about 7:30 a.m.

Moore said the helicopter is mainly used for patients who are seriously injured or seriously ill.
